The Paris 2024 Olympic Organizing Committee announced a partnership with the Pride House project. Promising to jointly promote inclusiveness for the LGBTQ community. At that time, athletes will have the opportunity to speak out against homophobia, transphobia and other injustices faced by the LGBTQ community.
Male-to-female transgender people only need to meet two conditions:
1. The transgender person has declared his gender as female for more than 4 years;
2. The transgender athlete’s serum testosterone is continuously below 10nmol/L for 12 months before the competition. And below 10nmol/L during the entire competition period.
Say Yes to Transgender Athletes
Tony Estanguet, president of the Paris Olympic Organizing Committee, said: “Athletes and various institutions will have ample opportunities to use the platform of the Olympics to tell the world that some things are unacceptable and we must make changes.”
The International Olympic Committee has always prohibited athletes from expressing opinions on politics, religion or identity during the Olympics. But this rule began to loosen at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In 2021, the Tokyo Olympics allowed athletes to “mildly protest” before the game and “express their views” at press conferences. Estanguet promised that when the Paris Olympics are held, athletes will be able to speak freely and convey messages when they are not competing.
In addition, cooperation with the Pride House is also one of the measures taken by the Paris Olympic Committee to promote the rights of the LGBTQ community. The Pride House is a project that started in 2010. Every time a major international sporting event is held, the Pride House will set up a special reception center at the venue of the event. So that the LGBTIQ+ community and friends can watch the game together, share the fun of sports. And promote the public’s understanding of the contribution of the LGBTIQ+ community to the sports industry and the existence of homophobia in sports.
Estanguet said: “We are very happy to participate in the ‘Pride House’ project, which will become a place for LGBTI+ communities and friends to communicate and celebrate together in 2024. ”
They transitioned not to win, but to be happy and true to themselves.
The number of transgender athletes at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics hit a record high, reaching 186. According to a statistic, since 2008, the number of transgender athletes at each Summer Olympics has more than doubled compared to the previous one. According to this rule, the number of LGBTQ athletes at the Paris Olympics may exceed 300 people.
This incident also triggered people’s understanding and thinking about the Olympic spirit. Some people began to re-examine the connotation and extension of the Olympic spirit. Thinking about how to maintain the purity and universality of the Olympic spirit while respecting multiculturalism.
Attention to the rights of sexual minorities
The LGBT display at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics also further increased people’s attention and awareness of the rights of sexual minorities. This will help promote social tolerance and understanding of sexual minorities and promote the diversified and inclusive development of society.
