We at DS Bodyskins know very well that while silicone bodysuits are designed to be seen and felt, it can be quite daunting wearing one in public for the first time.

So, let’s break down how you can comfortably go outside in your silicone bodysuit, so that you can enjoy public and social activities without self-consciousness or fear.

Test it at home

Wearing a silicone bodysuit, by definition, changes your shape. This will impact the way you walk, sit, bend down, and all other forms of movement–simply because it’s different from what you’ve been used to your whole life.

It’s important to wear your bodysuit around the house until you feel confident in how you can move and act while wearing it. Ideally, you’ll forget you even have it on (although it’s fine if you don’t!)

You can read our article here on a comprehensive guide to putting on, and taking off your bodysuit. You can also consider starting with a smaller piece to get used to the feeling, like silicone underwear.

Part of wearing it at home is also to get you accustomed to your reflection–you will have a different silhouette, and you mightn’t recognise yourself at first glance. It helps to wear your suit around the house until you’re familiar and comfortable with your reflection. This also includes the clothes you wear, and how they drape over the suit.

Just like without a bodysuit, some clothes are more flattering for specific body types and builds, and you’ll want to find the outfits which most suit your bodysuit and its shape.

Wearing your bodysuit at home is all about ironing out the nuances of how the bodysuit looks, and how you feel in it, without the crowds.

Plan your trip and ease into it

Once you feel confident in yourself while wearing the bodysuit at home, it’s time to think about your first trip outside. Will you take the bus? Will you walk, or drive? How hot is it outside?

There are many variables to consider when taking your first trip outside in your silicone bodysuit, and they should all instil confidence in you. It may sound obvious, but if you’re still a little nervous, don’t go on a 2-hour trip to the city–keep things bite-sized and approachable.

Try going for a walk along your street, down a quiet section where there aren’t too many people. This way, if you get nervous, you are still close to home and don’t need to deal with social interaction.

Your first trip should be quick, low-stakes and relatively uneventful, just so you’re used to being outside in your suit.

As you do more outside voyages, you can introduce new elements according to your comfort level – perhaps a visit to the shops, ordering a coffee at a cafe, or taking a trip on public transport, each time introducing something new and taking yourself a little bit further outside of your comfort zone.

Interacting with others

The reason going outside can be daunting in your silicone bodysuit, is that you open yourself up to the looks, thoughts and comments of strangers – and you can’t control them.

You might have a child stare at you, or hear a murmur under someone’s breath as they walk past, and this can cut to the core of the confidence you worked so hard to build.

However, there are a few things to remember when this happens:

  1. This happens regardless: People stare at each other, and comment on one another, all day, every day. When you’re in a bodysuit, however, you’re much more sensitive and self-conscious, and it feels like the whole world is watching you. Chances are, they’re just as focused on themselves as you are.
  2. Your perception isn’t reality: It’s very easy to project onto others our insecurities and our perceptions of what they’re thinking; the reality is that we never know. Someone may look at you out of admiration, out of a desire to have the confidence of wearing a bodysuit themselves, and you could read it as “they think I’m weird”. We aren’t mindreaders, so let’s not even try!
  3. Surround yourself with support: Try to go out with friends, so you have a network of people you can lean on for support and comfort. This has a huge impact on how you feel, and will add greatly to your overall confidence.

Go to events with likeminded people

Thankfully, there are many events and spaces opening up for non-binary and LGBTQ individuals where you can go, and be around those who not only understand how you’re feeling, but who are likely feeling the same way.

Check out transgender events across Australia and head to one near you to find likeminded people and make new friends. You can even do this before you’re confident enough to wear a bodysuit, so you can see how supportive the community is, and likely see others in bodysuits too.

Final thoughts

Wearing a silicone crossdressing bodysuit in public for the first time can be nerve-wracking, but it’s also a very empowering experience. With proper preparation, you can enjoy your transformation and express yourself authentically. Take your time, practice in comfortable settings, and most importantly, embrace your journey with pride!
